Foot Health and Diabetes: What You Need to Know
November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a perfect time to focus on its connection to foot health. For people living with diabetes, even a small cut or blister can become a big problem due to nerve damage and poor circulation.
The good news? A few simple daily habits can help keep your feet healthy, comfortable, and strong. Below, Clark Podiatry Center provides need-to-know tips for keeping foot health in check if you or a loved one is living with diabetes.
1. Inspect Your Feet Every Day
- Check your feet for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or nail problems.
- Early detection of changes can prevent minor issues from becoming serious.
2. Keep Feet Clean and Dry
- Wash your feet daily with mild soap and warm water.
- Dry them carefully, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections.
- Moisturize dry skin, but avoid applying lotion between the toes, where moisture can lead to infection.
3. Choose Proper Footwear
- Wear shoes that fit comfortably and protect your feet.
- Avoid tight or narrow shoes that can cause blisters or calluses.
- If you have neuropathy, always wear socks and shoes, even indoors, to prevent accidental injury.
- Diabetic-friendly shoes and socks can provide added protection and comfort.
4. Trim Nails Carefully
- Cut toenails straight across and file the edges gently.
- Avoid trimming them too short, as this can lead to ingrown toenails or infections.
5. Schedule Regular Podiatry Visits
- Regular foot exams are essential for anyone living with diabetes.
- A podiatrist can check circulation, nerve function, and spot problems early on.
Why Foot Health Should Be a Priority
Neglecting foot care can lead to ulcers, infections, and, in severe cases, amputation. But with consistent care and professional support, most diabetic foot problems are preventable.
This Diabetes Awareness Month, take the opportunity to review your foot care routine, and encourage loved ones living with diabetes to do the same.
