How Heat Can Affect Your Feet
Summertime and the living is easy…but the heat isn’t always easy on your feet! Whether you’re walking on hot pavement or wearing shoes that trap heat, your feet can suffer in surprising ways. Below, Clark Podiatry Center explains how heat can affect your feet and what you can do to protect them.
1. Swelling and Inflammation
One of the most common effects of heat on your feet is swelling. High temperatures cause blood vessels to expand, leading to fluid accumulation in the feet and ankles. This condition, known as heat edema, can cause discomfort and make shoes feel tight or restrictive.
- Tip: Elevate your feet when possible and stay hydrated!
2. Sweaty Feet and Odor
Warm weather triggers your sweat glands, especially in your feet. Excessive sweating can lead to foot odor, fungal infections like athlete’s foot, and even blisters.
- Tip: Choose moisture-wicking socks, breathable shoes, and consider using foot powder or antiperspirant sprays.
3. Burns from Hot Surfaces
Walking barefoot on hot sand, asphalt, or pool decks can cause burns and blisters. Surfaces can reach temperatures over 120°F in the summer, making foot protection essential.
- Tip: Always wear sandals or water shoes on potentially hot surfaces.
4. Dry, Cracked Heels
Heat and low humidity can cause skin to lose moisture, leading to dry, cracked heels. This can be painful and increase the risk of infection.
- Tip: Use a foot cream daily and exfoliate regularly.
5. Increased Risk of Fungal Infections
Hot, damp conditions are a breeding ground for fungi. Public pools, locker rooms, and sweaty shoes can increase your risk of athlete’s foot or toenail fungus.
- Tip: Keep your feet clean and dry, and wear flip-flops in communal areas.
Keep Your Feet Healthy in the Heat
Summer and high heat don’t have to mean foot problems. These preventative steps can keep your feet comfortable all season long.
