Is Your Heart Healthy?
Here’s a serious question: Is your heart healthy? February is American Heart Month, and this is the time we think about the state of the heart. While we will never know with certainty, we can listen to signals from our bodies about what’s happening inside our chest. One way to start is by looking down — at your feet and ankles. Our feet and ankles are top spots for signaling that something may be wrong in another part of the body.
Dr. Brandon A. Macy at Clark Podiatry Center sees patients each day with a common condition known as diabetes. With this piece alone, he is aware that his patients are at a higher risk of developing heart disease. Here are three ways he encourages patients to check in on their heart health:
Communicate changes
As podiatrists, we are honored to be a part of your care team. However, we won’t know changes during visits unless you share these details. Let’s keep the lines of communication open. These details matter, and we want you to know that we’re here to listen. From new pain to sudden swelling, tell us. We’re listening.
Keep calm
It’s true — stress can be a killer. Yes, increased stress impacts your blood pressure. It impacts your heart health. From exercising daily to finding a quiet time during the day, find ways to keep calm. Your mental health is just as valuable. Speak with your doctor about finding resources.
Stop smoking
If you’re still smoking, there are no questions about the state of your heart health: you’re in danger. Smoking has zero benefits to your health. Smoking impacts circulation, which is a critical part of our body’s healing. For this reason, many smokers have non-healing wounds or ulcers. Without quick action, the ulcers can become infected. Amputation is also a possible outcome.
This American Heart Month, start by knowing your risk and making some changes. Heart health and foot health aren’t too far apart. Monitor your feet regularly and be open to signals that you may need to call your doctor. We’re here to help.
