Pediatric Foot Health Tips – Protect Your Children’s Feet

Parenting is an incredibly demanding responsibility, and we understand that keeping up with all the tasks can be challenging. At Clark Podiatry Center, we have curated a comprehensive list of essential pediatric foot care tips that can help simplify this process for you. We are confident that our cheat sheet can provide parents with the necessary guidance to ensure their child’s feet remain healthy and happy.

Thumbs Up!

  1. Washing your children’s feet daily and teaching older children to maintain good foot hygiene can help prevent foot infections. Additionally, it is a great chance to inspect your child’s feet for any unusual changes in the skin or nails, such as lumps, growths, bruises, or other suspicious symptoms.
  2. Measure their feet often when buying shoes as they grow quickly.
  3. Please encourage them to stay active to keep them strong and fit. Activities like martial arts or dance can be good options.
  4. Our podiatrist can provide custom orthotics for children with developmental problems.
  5. Please pay attention to your child’s feet as they grow. Foot pain could indicate a more severe issue like Sever’s disease.

Thumbs Down!

  1. It is essential to take foot pain seriously and not ignore any complaints of discomfort in your child’s feet. Growing pains are not common in feet and should be addressed to prevent any worsening of symptoms.
  2. It is beneficial for your child’s development to allow them to be barefoot indoors as this helps them develop strength, balance, and foot coordination. However, shoes should be worn outdoors to protect them from sharp objects or diseases.
  3. It is not recommended that children wear hand-me-down shoes. Shoes previously worn by an older child may have been molded to fit their particular feet, making them unsuitable for a younger child.

If your children experience foot pain during or after physical activity, we recommend that you schedule an appointment at Clark Podiatry Center. Our board-certified podiatrist, Dr. Brandon A.
