A neuroma is an enlarged, benign growth of nerves, most commonly between the third and fourth toes. Neuromas are caused by tissue rubbing against and irritating the nerves. Pressure from poorly fitting shoes or an abnormal bone structure can also aggravate this condition. Symptoms may include sensations of thickness, burning, numbness, tingling, or pain in the ball of the foot.  Treatments generally include adjusting shoe styles to those with a lower heel, roomier fit and thicker soles.  Usually cortisone injections will be utilized to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling.  A series of sclreosing alcohol injections can also resolve the condition.

Conservative treatments frequently resolve the pain or progression of the neuroma, but in severe or recurrent cases, surgical removal of the affected section of nerve may be necessary.

Morton's neuroma refers the version that specifically develops between the third and fourth toes.
