Got a long flight coming up? Got kids going with you? You might prepare for it by testing out neck pillows, noise-canceling headphones, and maybe some eye masks. But what will you do to make the flight more comfortable for the feet?

Here are some foot-related items you could test out:

  • Compression socks - to promote circulation and reduce swelling.
  • Disposable slippers or flip-flops – Unless you’re used to it, you might not want to be seated with your shoes on the whole flight, which could be 10+ hours. (Hint: ask your airline if they will give you disposable slippers!).
  • Footrest or hammock – there are a few products out there for people who want to rest their feet higher than the floor. Many folks with short legs (like your children) might be more comfortable if they can prop their feet up.

More importantly, however, you and your children should try to keep your feet active as much as possible throughout the flight. Why? That’s because the long period of inactivity (in an upright position) can cause your feet to be uncomfortable due to low circulation. When you do get up, your feet might not fit as comfortably into your shoes, and you might even feel some numbness or tingling. In rare cases, it can also lead to blood clots, especially if you are prone to them.

Here are some of the foot-related activities you can do on a long haul flight.

  • Drink a lot of water and go to the bathroom. Hydration is helpful for circulation. It also makes you want to go to the bathroom more, which gets you up and out of your seat more. Make sure you have your children drink water every time you do.
  • Gone to the bathroom? Great! Use it as an excuse to spread and stretch. Walk up and down the aisle and get moving!
  • Draw circles with your toes. Rotate at the ankle and make them larger or smaller as you go. It will also help you with some stretching, pointing and flexing your feet.
  • Scrunch your toes, hold, and then spread them wide, hold. This exercise will wake up many tendons and ligaments in your feet and engage the whole foot!
  • Try some toeholds if you have space. While sitting, trying bringing your knees up (engaging your abs) so that you can reach your feet. Gently pull your toes back and stretch the plantar fascia and your Achilles tendon.
  • Finally, conduct an orchestra with your feet. It’s a great movement for your feet and ankles.

During pregnancy, many things change. Your body reacts to the internal and external environment differently. And as the body begins to prepare for the last few months of pregnancy and giving birth, it retains more fluids and even allows for bones to shift. It’s amazing what the body is capable of doing!

Here’s what to look for during pregnancy, for baby and mama’s feet.

Baby’s Feet:

  • Feet will begin to form with separated toes at about 10 weeks
  • They will use the feet to help them move and explore the amniotic sac
  • Closer to the end of the pregnancy, toe or foot deformities can be detected, such as clubfoot, overlapping toes, amniotic band syndrome, or polydactyly. Don’t worry though, as these are not common occurrences.

Mother’s Feet:

  • Water retention and natural weight gain will cause edema. The swelling can cause discomfort in the feet and even change sensation.
  • The extra weight that the mother carries can flatten the arches and cause the ankles to roll inward, as with overpronation. Over time, this can cause chronic issues like plantar fasciitis and/or Achilles tendonitis.
  • Cramping can occur in the feet and/or legs as part of pregnancy. The exact cause is unknown but stretching, walking, hydration, and comfortable footwear can help prevent cramps.
  • As the feet change, pressure points can change as well. Pain can occur in the heel, arch, or balls of feet as a consequence of problems like edema and overpronation.

To find relief from these symptoms and changes, try some of the following:

  • Rest often so that your feet do not have to overwork. Schedule in times to rest.
  • Use compression socks and elevate your feet to reduce swelling.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good supportive features and cushioning.
  • Stay active to increase circulation of fluids back up from your feet and ankles, and to prevent cramping.

If you or a loved one suffers from gout, you know that it can be a crippling condition. This intense form of arthritis can suddenly cause pain, swelling, and redness in a joint – most commonly in the big toe joint. It can cause pain to most of the forefoot and even in the ankles and/or knees as well.

NOTE: If you feel that you might have gout, make sure that you have made an appointment with your doctor and received a proper diagnosis.

After some time, gout patients may get really good at recognizing symptoms of an oncoming attack. You may feel sensations of burning or tingling, stiff or sore joints, and eventually, redness, swelling, and pain. For some, the pain can come suddenly in the middle of the night, causing you to wake up.

Gout attacks generally occur after drinking more than usual, eating foods that are high in purine (like liver or mussels), being dehydrated, ingesting a lot of sugar, or as a side effect of taking certain medications.

When you feel an attack coming on, try the following:

  • RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression*, Elevation to reduce symptoms. *If even the littlest bit of contact with the gout joint causes you pain, you may not want to use compression.
  • Drink a LOT of water. Hydration will help you flush out the buildup of uric acid in your joints.
  • Take NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
  • If possible, get moving. Low-impact exercise can help to get blood and fluids circulating to reduce the uric acid build up. Even doing some exercises while resting the affected foot/feet in bed can help your symptoms.

When a gout attack is in full swing, you may be in too much pain to do much. You’ll want to have friends or family members help you with daily tasks and take it easy in general. Eat a nutritious and healthy diet and drink lots of water. Additionally, use cushiony, soft slippers when you do need to walk around (like going to the bathroom) to alleviate pain.

“Why are my feet so swollen?”

At the end of some days, you might notice that your feet are larger than they were when you woke up this morning. If you’ve been on your feet all day, whether from a job that requires standing or from walking all day, there’s a good chance that your feet will be a bit swollen. A slight swelling of the feet is natural in these cases, but edema (swelling) that is chronic, uneven, or severe can indicate a larger health problem.

Read on to find out if one of the causes below (other than standing for long periods of time) apply to you:

Injury, infection, Insect Bite, Inactivity

  • Injuries, including sports injuries to the feet, can cause swelling for several minutes to several days, depending on the severity of the impact.
  • An infection can cause swelling to the feet, especially if it is not treated properly, right away.
  • Those who are allergic to insect bites will also experience swelling if pests get a taste on the feet.
  • If you sit still or lie down for too long, the lack of circulation of blood and fluids can cause them to pool in the lower extremities, resulting in swollen feet.

Hormonal changes

  • Hormonal changes can sometimes cause swelling, particularly during the menstrual cycle and especially during pregnancy.
  • Pregnant women are likely to have swollen feet because of their changing body structure. As the baby grows, it can restrict circulation of blood and fluids back up from the legs and feet. The result is swollen feet that may require you to get shoes up to 2 sizes larger! You’ll want to put your feet up as often as you can.

Other health problems

  • Those who have varicose veins may experience poor circulation.
  • A blood clot is a serious problem in which the foot, ankle, or leg will show swelling. This usually occurs in one leg, as opposed to both legs.
  • Lymph problems can cause you to have poor circulation of fluids in your legs, causing swelling in the feet (lymphedema).
  • A symptom of heart, liver, or kidney problems is edema.

Many people suffer from swollen feet. Although it is more common in the summer months, people can be affected by swelling in the feet even in the wintertime. Swollen feet are not usually painful, but can be concerning and warrant attention.

If your job or daily routine involves a lot of standing or walking, you may be at risk for developing swelling in the feet. If this is a temporary condition and goes away after adequate rest or exercise, you need not be worried. However, if swelling in your feet is a reoccurring problem and if you also have other health conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis, it is advisable to consult with a doctor or your primary care physician.

Swollen feet can sometimes indicate an underlying problem or injury such as:

  • Foot Injury - Common foot conditions that come with symptoms of swelling and inflammation are sprained ankles. A sprained ankle causes the bones in your ankle to be stretched abnormally and causes strain which leads to swelling. Strains in the foot or ankle, fractures, and Achilles Tendonitis are also foot conditions that may cause swelling.
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Infection – Patients who suffer from diabetes can have nerve problems that make them more prone to foot infections. These infections can worsen rapidly without a treatment plan.
  • Clots – Blood clots can be life threatening and if you ever experience foot swelling along with fever, pain and changes in the color of the leg, you must visit a doctor as soon as possible.
  • Kidney, blood or lung disease
  • Obesity
  • Side effects from medications

There are many home remedies out there to treat foot swelling. Most treatments bring relief by increasing circulation. Thus, it is very important to keep your body hydrated by drinking water and other fluids, have a regular exercise routine, and take time to rest. If you work at a desk all day long in a sitting position, stretch and move around every hour or two. This may be as simple as taking a walk downstairs for some fresh air or walking around the office for 5 minutes.
