My baby’s feet are peeling!! Ahh!! What is wrong? Why is this happening and why is my baby shedding skin like a snake? Don’t worry - this has happened to all of us at one point or another, either in our childhood or our adult life. And it’s nothing to worry or be scared or paranoid about. There are many different reasons for peeling skin and there are treatments and cures for all of them.

Causes of Peeling Skin

  • Allergies - environmental, pet related, household chemicals, food
  • Inflammation - Bacterial or Viral
  • Infections
  • Skin diseases - eczema, rashes, contact dermatitis
  • Reactions - perfume, detergent, bath wash, soap, shampoo or clothing fabric.
  • Drug reactions
  • Sunburn or heat rash
  • Mosquito bites

Auto - Immune Causes

  • Kawasaki disease
  • Psoriasis

As you can see, there are a multitude of causes for peeling skin. This is very common in children of all ages and usually doesn’t pose any danger. The first step would be to thoroughly examine the child and chart down all the signs and symptoms you see. Next, note the changes in diet, environment, weather, medication, etc. to try to identify the culprit. Also look for changes – are they peeling small or large chunks of skin? Is the peeling evident in other parts of the body? Is your child itchy and scratching the area? This can cause infection so it would be best to leave it alone. Analyzing these signs and symptoms is a great practice since the doctor would also ask you these same questions and thus, you will be able to provide ample information to your physician for an accurate diagnosis.

In some cases, peeling skin can be severe and life threatening. If your child is suffering from peeling skin that does not go away in a few days and is in severe discomfort, go and visit a doctor. If your child’s feet are red, blistery or inflamed, they should be examined by a board certified podiatrist. Peeling skin can cause infections, sores, lesions that can spread and also lead to permanent scarring if not treated immediately.
