Are the children in school or about to go back to school? Make sure that they are prepared for academic learning and physical activity with the right shoes! Foot pain from shoes that are not supportive or painful can be distracting for them. Give them the best foot forward as they start the new school year.

Your children will most likely need more than one pair of shoes. Make sure you focus on safety and support as you fit your children with new shoes:

  • Everyday casual shoes – Shoes that they will wear to school on most days will wear out faster. This is especially true if they walk to and from school. Be sure to purchase shoes that are made of good material, have arch and heel support, and ample cushioning in the inner sole. If shoes lack these characteristics, orthotic inserts can help prevent foot problems.
  • Everyday casual shoes part 2 – Does your child sweat excessively due to hyperhidrosis? We recommend that (s)he has at least 2 or more everyday shoes in the rotation. That way, each pair of shoes can dry out completely between wears. Drying shoes out will help prevent bacterial growth and foot odor.
  • Uniform shoes – Most shoes that are a part of the uniform are made with supportive features. However, if your child needs extra support, you can use generic orthotic inserts. For specific needs, come in to see Dr. Macy for custom-made orthotics at our office.
  • Sneakers for physical education – Not all casual shoes will be sneakers. That’s why you should make sure to have at least one pair of sneakers or running shoes in the rotation for PE class. Your child is also more likely to sweat during PE, which can feel uncomfortable when going back to academic classes.
  • Shoes for sportsDo your children participate in after-school sports? Depending on the sport, your child might need cleats, wrestling shoes, cheerleading shoes, etc. These activity-specific shoes are designed with the movements they make while playing sports, so be sure to get the appropriate shoes.

Don’t forget to have your child measured and try shoes on before purchasing them. Additionally, growing feet shouldn’t experience growing pains. An important aspect of foot care is to make sure that you have good shoe habits. That includes long-term shoe maintenance and wearing them properly so that they provide maximum support to your feet.

Here are some habits you should adopt, as well as some habits you should drop!

DOs:

  • Keep your shoes clean, which includes keeping your feet clean. This will help prevent the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi that could rot your shoes and make them smell! You might use a shoe spray or an activated charcoal bag to absorb moisture if your feet tend to sweat a lot. Additionally, keeping them clean of dirt (and in the winter, of rock salt) can reduce the rate at which they degrade.
  • Wear socks with shoes, especially closed-toe shoes. You are more likely to have bacterial or fungal growth/infection without socks to absorb some of the moisture from your feet. Got hyperhidrosis? You may want to bring an extra pair of socks with you to change into midday.
  • Unlace your shoes before taking them off to reduce wear and tear on the materials that make up the structure of your shoe. Overstretching the material can reduce the supportiveness of the shoes and prevent your shoes from fitting with the proper snugness for your feet.

DO NOTs:

  • DON’T wear one pair of shoes every single day.  Not only are you wearing them down quicker, they can also become smelly and harbor bacteria and fungi, as these microorganisms thrive in damp, dark, warm surfaces. Try to rotate between at least two pairs of shoes to allow them to dry out completely. Additionally, do not put shoes in an enclosed space right away. Instead, allow them to air out overnight and then put them away if need be.
  • DON’T fold shoe backs. Some shoes have flexible backs that can forcibly be folded down if you’re in a hurry to get out the door. After a few instances of folding the back, you will notice that they stay folded down. This means that the structure of the shoe becomes compromised and your feet may have to strain more to remain stable. You might suffer from chronic overuse injuries like plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis.
  • DON’T drag your feet. Dragging the feet will wear down the outer soles of your shoes and can also make you more prone to tripping over your own feet or a curb. You can sustain an injury like an ankle sprain or broken toe if you’re not careful!
  • DON’T continue to wear shoes that hurt. If shoes hurt your feet, you can either donate them or try adding cushioning with orthotic inserts to better support your feet.

You may have heard that if you are not having a good night’s sleep, you may want to try sticking one or more feet out from under the covers. The feet become exposed to cooler air, which helps your overall body temperature to cool down as well. Why does this seem to work? Well, the feet have many special blood vessels that can open up and send heat out through them. Additionally, they have about 3,000 glands per square inch to release sweat and heat as well.

All the heat and sweat being released through the feet is great when barefoot, but what happens if they get trapped in socks and shoes? The increased heat and moisture together create an ideal environment for odor-causing bacteria to flourish. If the situation is not treated properly, the situation can continue to cause embarrassing issues for you.

Prevention Tips

One way to fight foot odor is to prevent it from happening in the first place. We at Clark Podiatry Center suggest the following:

  • When wearing closed-toed shoes, always wear socks. Even better if they are moisture-wicking socks.

  • Try to wear shoes that allow your feet to breathe – e.g. leather, canvas, mesh.

  • Clean your feet each day in warm water with soap. Let them dry thoroughly and check for signs of rash or infections.

  • Rotate shoes from day to day and wear a clean pair of socks (or 2) each day. Allow your shoes to fully dry in between wears.

  • Use baby powder or foot powder on your feet to absorb sweat.

Treatment Options

Embarrassing foot odor can prevent you from going to social events and even cause discomfort for others in enclosed spaces, like planes. You may be embarrassed even to bring up your foot odor issues with your foot doctor. Dr. Brandon Macy, our board-certified podiatrist understands that you may have discomfort with this and will treat your foot issues with care and respect. Some options he may give you are:

  • Home treatment: Soak your feet in a solution of strong black tea (plus cool water) for 30 minutes each week to kill off bacteria and close pores. A mixture of vinegar and water works as well.

  • Ongoing foot odor can be caused by an infection or hereditary excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Dr. Macy may prescribe a prescription ointment, which you can use overnight with a wrap.

  • Iontophoresis may reduce the sweating for those with hyperhidrosis.

  • In the most severe cases, a surgeon can cut the nerve that controls sweat to stop sweating in the feet, but it may increase sweating in other areas instead.
