Growing children are constantly changing and evolving. As children grow, their legs and feet also change.

Most babies are usually born with Genu Varum or bow legs. As this is a common problem, it often goes unnoticed. The term bow legs refers to a physical problem which means that the lower leg is bowing or bending in relation to the thigh. Children have a degree of Genu Varum until the age of 3 or 4 due to the way they sit with the soles of the feet touching. This causes the lower leg and thigh to curve outwards and leave a little space between their knee joints. Once the child starts to crawl around and walk, the legs start to straighten out.

Causes

  • Softening or weakening of bones (Rickets)
  • Improper diet (Vitamin D deficiency)
  • Physical Trauma or accident
  • Skeletal problems
  • Infections
  • Tumors affecting the growth of the leg

Symptoms

  • Bowing in one or both legs
  • Pain
  • Limping

Bow knees can be painful or cause a child discomfort and difficulty to walk. They may also worsen as the child gets older. If you notice any of the following symptoms in your child, it is important to seek the advice of a board certified podiatrist.

When to see a doctor

  • Your child is complaining of pain
  • Your child is limping or walks with difficulty
  • Bow leg in only one leg
  • Signs of bow leg getting worse after the age of 3
