It’s a pandemic! People everywhere can’t seem to take their eyes off their phones! It’s become part of daily rituals, as if they are a body part. So it’s no surprise that there are people constantly on their phones – during dinner, laying in bed, while walking, and even while driving. For some, it’s gotten to the point that it’s impossible to imagine how life happened before phones.

For the most part, it seems harmless, and even useful or protective (as recording devices or companionship on the other end of the line). However, lately, it seems that lines are being crossed. Even the simple act of walking has become an increased risk factor for injury because of the attention taken from looking at the path ahead and instead given to checking phones.

The problem is that walkways, sidewalks, and floors in general are not always smooth and flat. It’s common to find that people have twisted or sprained their ankles because they weren’t paying attention to their environments. What’s worse is that there are increased risks of folks crossing the street while on their phones, leaving them more prone to getting hit by a car or bike. Safety is the biggest issue, with children and adults being at risk of kidnapping or assault.

At Clark Podiatry Center, we want our patients to be safe and alert when walking on the streets. We care about your foot and ankle safety, as well as overall safety. So we remind you to put the phone in your pocket or purse, and watch where you are walking – or stop to do what you need to do. If you have suffered an injury to your feet or ankles from uneven sidewalks, come see our board-certified podiatrist, Brandon Macy, DPM. He and his team will be more than happy to help you at our Clark, NJ office. Make an appointment today!
