Travel season is here. Do you have a plan if you were to injure your foot or ankle while away from your podiatrist? At Clark Podiatry Center, we want to keep you walking whether you’re at home or across the country. Here are a few common foot problems that may occur during this busy travel season. Don’t worry — we’re providing solutions for you, too.foot problems while traveling

Sprained ankle

Did you step out of the car awkwardly? Perhaps you were running a bit too fast while playing with the family’s new puppy. It doesn’t take much to end up with a sprained ankle, which is caused by twisting or adding force to the ankle in an unnatural movement. If this happens while you’re out of town, your main priority is to rest and elevate your ankle while also providing ice to reduce swelling.

Ingrown toenail

If you’ve been wearing your shoes tightly, adding additional walking while traveling may lead to an ingrown toenail. If you notice that the corner of your toenail is starting to dig into the surrounding skin, try to soak your feet in warm, soapy water. If you notice any signs of infection, such as redness or pain, call your podiatrist and don’t delay treatment.

Athlete’s foot

Did you forget your shower shoes while visiting the locker room at a friend’s gym? Walking barefoot in places like locker rooms increases your risk for Athlete’s foot. If you notice drying skin, inflammation, itching or blisters between your toes, there are over-the-counter treatment options that provide relief until you’re back home. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with your podiatrist to ensure that you treat the fungus quickly and effectively.

Plan ahead. Get the contact information for our office and let us know if you have any concerns prior to traveling miles away from our office. Schedule an appointment with Clark Podiatry Center by calling 732-382-3470. Dr. Brandon A. Macy is a board-certified podiatrist. Additionally, New Jersey’s Children’s Foot Health Institute is also part of the Clark Podiatry Center. Visit us at our Clark, New Jersey office.
