What an exciting period of time! Your baby just started kicking and crawling and must be eagerly looking forward to those trips in the stroller to experience the sights and sounds of your neighborhood. Although they are not quite ready to take big steps yet, it is very important to keep those feet covered and protected when they are outside in order to support their growth and learning during this stage of infancy.

Studies state that approximately 70% of children’s foot problems stem from wearing the wrong size and type of shoes. Wearing shoes that are too tight can change the shape of a child’s foot and cause other problems in the future. Poor fitting shoes may also cause your child to stumble or fall and may delay their walking skills.

With so many choices in styles, colors and brands, keep in mind that the best type of shoe will be one that provides foot protection as well as ample movement and comfort for your child. Here is what you should look for and what you should avoid when going shoe shopping for the little one!

Baby Shoe Shopping Checklist

What to look for:

  • Lightweight , airy, sweat resistant
  • Made of leather, canvas, mesh
  • Do they bend? Are they flexible?
  • Rubber soles
  • Wide toe box (1/2 inch space between big toe and tip of shoe)
  • Soft, thin soles

What to avoid:

  • Shoes that are too tight
  • Shoes that are made of plastic or other synthetic material
  • Bulky shoes
    • Narrow toe box
  • Hand me downs
  • Hard bottoms

When purchasing new shoes, make sure to test them out for comfort and fit and monitor your child for a couple of days to check for signs of discomfort or pain. Children’s shoes should be comfortable from the beginning and do not usually need to be worn in.

If you notice that your baby is suddenly taking their shoes off a lot, rubbing their feet or ankles, or walking clumsily, it may be time for new shoes. In other cases, this may signal another type of foot problem. If your child is experiencing some type of foot deformity or change in the foot growth pattern, only a board certified podiatrist can recommend the appropriate treatment or course of action.
