By Pediatric Bone Infections
November 30, 2016

Did you know that children and babies are the most likely to have a bone infection? Their growing bones have a larger supply of blood as they develop, making them more susceptible to infections that are carried through the blood. The bacteria are most often found to be Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as staph infection, and can come from other infections. Other common bacterial strains found in bone infections are streptococci and salmonella.

Symptoms and Diagnoses

If your child has a bone infection, the following symptoms can be observed: fever, soreness, redness, inability or unwillingness to move affected bones due to pain.

Bone infections are not easily diagnosed since the problem is not always obvious on the surface level. Eventually, if the doctor believes it to be a bone infection, your child may need X-rays and MRIs, blood tests, and maybe even a bone sample to determine the type of infection.

Treatment Options

After diagnosis by a doctor, there are a few treatment options including:

  • Oral or IV Antibiotics
  • Surgery – if the infection is severe, surgery might be necessary to clear out pus and debris or segments of the cartilage and bone that may need to be removed.
  • Bone Graft – if there is dead or infected bone that needs to be removed, a bone graft will replace the area.

As implied above, if infections are left untreated your child may need surgery, and even bone replacement. Bone infections can also lead to joint infections, especially in the hip, shoulder, elbow, and ankle. If cartilage or other parts of joints are infected, it can lead to permanent damage or future arthritis.

If you suspect a bone infection, especially in the feet or ankles (or after an injury), bring your child to Clark Podiatry Center to see our board-certified podiatrist, Dr. Brandon Macy. He will make sure to rule out all other possibilities and help you and your family get the treatment that you need. Make an appointment today at our Clark, NJ office!
