Do you have a bony bump on the inside of the first joint of the big toe? This bump is called a bunion and is a sign of a deformity that occurs when the bone or tissue of the big toe pushes against the next toe.

Bunions can be very painful and can also restrict the movement of the big toe. You may notice corns or calluses that form on the joint or the toes when they rub against the shoes. In addition to being painful, you may be embarrassed at the appearance of your feet. It may also be hard to get shoes that fit properly.

Both men and women suffer from bunions. Bunions are caused by shoes that are too tight, an injury, genetics, flat feet or pronated feet, your gait or arthritis.

Diagnosing and Treating Bunions

If you suspect that you have a bunion, come visit us at Clark Podiatry Center. We will carefully examine both feet and then begin with conservative treatments:

  • Change your shoes to those with a wider toe box to give toes some wiggle room. Avoid high heels as they place too much pressure on the toe joints.
  • Apply ice several times a day to reduce inflammation.
  • Rest and elevate the foot.
  • With your doctor's approval, take anti-inflammatory medication like naproxen and ibuprofen to decrease inflammation.
  • Custom-fitted orthotics can redistribute pressure to impede bunion growth.
  • Reduce stress on the bunion by taping and padding the toes and the ball of the foot.
  • Cortisone injections will lessen pain and swelling.

In severe cases, conservative treatments may not relieve pain and discomfort. If you are still in pain after trying these methods for some time, we will discuss surgical options with you. A bunionectomy, or surgery on the bunion, is usually done on an outpatient basis and will return your toe to its correct position to eliminate your pain.
