What is our top recommendation to a patient who smokes? Stop. This habit is harmful to your health overall, including your heart — and your feet. February is American Heart Month, and the Clark Podiatry Center team is reminding patients of the dangers of smoking. With each cigarette, you are increasing your risk for health complications. In the United States, cigarette smoking causes about 1 in every 5 deaths each year, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

How smoking impacts your heart

The chemicals in tobacco cause damage to your blood cells. The same chemicals may also impact how your heart functions as well as its structure. Combining smoking with other risk factors for the disease, such as high blood pressure or obesity, a patient further increases their risk. As time progresses, additional health complications may follow:

  • Chest pain
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Death

How smoking impacts your feet

Poor circulation and Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) are among the top ways smoking impacts your feet. Poor circulation limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood throughout your body, including to your feet. Circulation also plays a critical role in healing wounds and is a common complication for patients who have diabetes. PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the head, organs, and limbs. PAD can cause pain in your legs and feet.

Quit smoking today. According to researchers, no matter how long you’ve smoked, quitting will benefit your health. We want to help you stop and limit the damage to your body, including your feet and ankles. At Clark Podiatry Center, Dr. Brandon A. Macy, a board-certified podiatrist, treats various conditions such as heel pain, diabetic wounds, bunions, nerve pain, and more. What’s holding you back from moving?

During the month of February, Dr. Brandon A. Macy and his team at Clark Podiatry Center are celebrating American Heart Month, and all of the benefits of a healthy heart, including the ones to your feet and ankles. While many people know that getting up and moving a bit more is a great first step, they are being held back from foot and ankle pain. So, what’s holding you back from moving more often, improving your circulation, and getting steps closer to a healthier heart?

Here are some common conditions:

Ingrown toenails

This condition doesn’t seem like a big deal until it hurts to put on your shoes and take steps. An ingrown toenail occurs when the toenail begins to grow into your skin. This can be very painful and can even lead to an infection. Look for redness and inflammation near the ingrown toenail.

Plantar fasciitis

In short, plantar fasciitis is heel pain. This discomfort is typically felt in the morning after a period of rest. With simple treatments, including switching footwear or using orthotics, your pain can greatly decrease. Moving around with heel pain is neither normal nor fun. Address your pain at the earliest stage.

Undiagnosed pain

If your feet or ankles hurt, there’s a reason. Don’t ignore this pain and assume that additional movement will make things better. You may have an undiagnosed ankle sprain, a fracture or a condition that hasn’t fully healed. To avoid worsening a condition, it’s best to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to receive a proper diagnosis and individual treatment plan.

Receive a diagnosis, learn about treatment options, and listen to the advice of your podiatrist on how to continue your journey to a healthier heart. Don’t let these conditions hold you back in your pursuit. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Brandon A. Macy of Clark Podiatry Center or call 732-382-3470; he is a board-certified podiatrist at our Clark, New Jersey office in Union County. New Jersey’s Children’s Foot Health Institute is a part of the Clark Podiatry Center, too.
