5 Foot Care Tips for National Foot Health Awareness Month

April is National Foot Health Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on foot care and work on the general well-being of our feet. Needless to say, the team at Clark Podiatry Center loves the month of April and is excited to share the following tips and tricks for achieving optimal foot health.

Invest in Proper Footwear

Ill-fitting shoes can cause numerous problems, including bunions, corns, and ingrown toenails. Invest in shoes that provide adequate support, cushioning, and room for your toes to wiggle. Remember to replace worn-out shoes promptly to maintain proper support, reduce the risk of foot issues, and lower the risk of fungal growth.

Practice Good Hygiene

Wash your feet daily with mild soap and water, making sure to dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections. Trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails, and moisturize your feet regularly to prevent dry, cracked skin.

Give Your Feet a Break

Take short breaks to elevate your feet and relieve pressure, especially if you’re on your feet for extended periods. Soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salts to relax tired muscles and improve circulation.

Stretch and Exercise

Just like any other part of your body, your feet need regular exercise and stretching. Incorporate exercises that strengthen the muscles in your feet and ankles, such as toe curls, ankle circles, and calf stretches. Additionally, consider activities like yoga or pilates that promote balance and flexibility.

Visit a Podiatrist

Make regular appointments with a podiatrist! To keep you moving, a podiatrist will examine your feet and ankles, apprise you of any underlying or developing conditions, and come up with a treatment plan.
